What is Phone System in Microsoft Teams?

A lot has changed in modern businesses, but the basic phone call – or one of its modern variants – is still foundational. With many businesses adopting the Office 365 suite of programs to conduct their work, Microsoft developed Phone System. This service works hand in hand with Microsoft Teams, enabling complete Private Branch Exchange capabilities and call control directly in-program.

Phone System was designed to be completely integrated with many business’ modernized workflows in today’s digital transition. Users have the ability to place and receive calls (with added address book integration), transfer calls, and mute calls all directly in Microsoft Teams.

Additional features are available that allow Phone System to expand the capabilities of client interaction and internal communication for your business.

Auto Attendants

Phone System’s auto attendants can be used to create an internal menu system, helping internal and external callers navigate the company directory to reach their desired contact in various departments and branches of an organization

Call Queues

Create greetings that organize incoming calls, putting them on hold or directing them to the next available call attendant.

Cloud Voicemail

For each licensed user, Cloud Voicemail can be used to take messages left by callers, then making them available on all Microsoft Teams platforms.

Microsoft’s Phone System also supports a variety of ways to use the service. With support for traditional computer headsets, Microsoft Teams-compatible IP phones, or even mobile devices, it’s easy to integrate Phone System into your daily workflow.

It’s important to note that calls within an organization are handled through Phone System internally regardless of geographic location. For nationwide and international businesses, this eliminates the overhead long-distance and international charges for internal company calls. However, external calls – contacting landlines and mobile phones – require an additional Calling Plan for Office 365.
