What is End of Life for Windows 7?

End of life is the term that Microsoft uses to identify the period when the company will no longer support an operating system or application. In this case, it means that, as of Jan.14, 2020, Microsoft will move on from Windows 7 and no longer patch security holes in the operating system.

Can I Continue to Run Windows 7 After January 14, 2020?

Yes, you can continue using Windows 7 – even after January 14, 2020; it will run as it does today. However, we advise that you upgrade to Windows 10 as Microsoft will not provide technical support, software updates, and fixes. Additionally, your Managed Service Provider will not be responsible for data (or compromise of your system). Issues will be very costly and potentially catastrophic.

Can I Upgrade My Current PC to Stay Secure?

While you can upgrade your current machine to Windows 10 to maintain security, it is essential to consult a professional before trying this option. Many factors go into deciding if an upgrade over replacement is the best and most cost-effective course of action. Things like lifecycle, processor, and RAM speed, as well as graphics card compatibility, all work together to produce your experience. It is important to ensure these are right for Windows 10 before upgrading to avoid negative impacts to your performance.

Should I Replace My PC Now or Wait Until the End of the Year?

Due to end-of-life coinciding with end-of-year – and the holidays – it is wise to get started now.  During the holiday season, we usually experience longer than expected shipping times, and this will be made worse by those who procrastinate; because of this, there is a potential risk of not completing upgrade projects before the deadline. Depending on how many Windows 7 machines you have that may need upgrading or replacing, it would be wise to determine a schedule and replace or upgrade them over time before the end of the year is here.
